Chief Grand Master Leslie Largo, ODL, leads General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Leslie Largo was the “First Instructor” when the Pedoy’s School of Escrima opened in 1961 and is one of the best-known Grand Masters in Hawaii. Grand Master Leslie is a Vietnam veteran awarded the silver and bronze stars for his military service in combat. Besides teaching Derobio, he also teaches the students the different Escrima styles of the members of the Moncado Federation. Grand Master Leslie is also a black belt in Kempo. Chief Grand Master Leslie received the prestigious “Order of Datu Lapu-Lapu” award from the World Eskrima-Kaki-Arnis Federation (World’s largest EscrimaOrganization headquartered in the Philippines) on July 23, 2018, for his lifetime dedication to teaching and promoting the Martial Arts of the Philippines. At the time, only 18 other Escrima Grandmasters in the world had received the Order of DatuLapuLapu award.
Grand Master Carlton Kramer, ODL, started his training of DerobioEscrima in 1971. Grand Master Carlton trained under the Great Grand Master Braulio Pedoy and The Batikan Eddie Pedoy for over 30 years and is second in command at the General Ablen’s School for DerobioEscrima. Grand Master Carlton traveled extensively with the Great Grand Master Braulio Pedoythroughout Hawaiian Island, the mainland, and the Philippines. Grand Master Carlton as the honor of being the first non-FilipinoMaster of Derobio. Chief Master Knut Peacock has been training in Derobio since 1972. Knut studied directly under the Great Grand Master Braulio Pedoy and The Bakitan Eddie Pedoy. Master Knut is proficient in one and two bolo fighting and has demonstrated this throughout the Hawaiian Islandsand mainland. Master Knut has the other Derobio Masters reporting to him and is third in command of General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima.
Master Nai Hasegawa runs our Derobio school in Maui. Nai has an extensive martial arts background, including Kali and JKD Concepts. He is aProfessor 8th degree black belt Shangkou Fighting System and founder and Chief of Fire Horse Martial Arts. Nai has two daughters, Instructor Tiara & Instructor Latasha; theyare both red shirt full instructors and are very proficient in one & two bolo movements of Derobio. Nai’s son, Na’I, is also a red shirt instructor and has won many Escrima tournaments for the school. Master Nai is fourth in command of General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima.
Master Glen Spence is operating the General Ablen branch in Virginia. He initially started training DerobioEscrima under the teaching of Grandmaster Tyrone Takahashi and the Batikan Eduardo Pedoy in 2004. In 2015 he and his academy joined General Ablen’s School of Derobio Escrima, ledby Senior Grand Master Gary Largo. Glen is a 30-year Army Veteran and has earned the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medals while serving in the Middle East and abroad during Operations Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom. He also has a 4th Degree Black belt in Taekwondo and is an Instructor level Sifu in Applied Wing Chun Kung Fu. He is the current Global Stick and Blade Alliance World Champion in Single Padded Stick and CaranzaDivision.
Instructor Miroslav (Mark) Liebich is a full-redshirt instructor at the Maui Branch of the General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Mark has been training for over 11 years at the Maui Branch of the General Ablen’s School for DerobioEscrima and is second in command at the Maui School, directly reporting to Master Nai Hasegawa. Mark is proficient in one and two bolo movements and has excelled in all aspects of Derobio, including the 1,728counters.
Instructor Latasha Hasegawa is a full-redshirt instructor at the Maui Branch of the General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Latasha has been in martial arts all her life, is proficient in one and two bolo movements, and has excelled in all aspects of Derobio.
Instructor Tiara Hasegawa is a full-redshirt instructor at the Maui Branch of the General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Tiara has been in martial arts all her life, is proficient in one and two bolo movements, and has excelled in all aspects of Derobio.
Instructor Na’i Hasegawa is the newest red-shirt instructor at the Maui Branch of the General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Nai is proficient in one & two bolo Derobio movements and our style’s 1,728 defense locks and counters.
Instructor Paul Quick is a full-red shirt instructor at the Oahu Branch of the General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Paul is proficient in one and two bolo movements and has excelled in learning the Big Man fighting style of Derobio, along with Derobio’s 1,728 defensive locks and counters.
Instructor Royce Calatoc is a full-red shirt instructor at the Oahu Branch of the General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Maestro Royce is proficient in one & two bolo Derobio movements and our style’s 1,728 defense locks and counters
Instructor Dexter is a full-red shirt instructor at the Oahu Branch of the General Ablen’s School of DerobioEscrima. Maestro Dexter is proficient in one & two bolo Derobio movements and our style’s 1,728 defense locks and counters.
Darin Miura has successfully completed his advanced Derobio weapon training and has been promoted to the rank of Blue Shirt-Maestro Level.
Leilani Blue has successfully completed her advanced Derobio weapon training and has been promoted to the rank of Blue Shirt-Maestra Level. Leilani has excelled in one and two bolo fighting techniques and is proficient in the traditional Derobio Bolo dances.
Mia Raine Kalahiki Pasion has successfully completed her advanced Derobio weapon training and has been promoted to the rank of Blue Shirt-Maestra Level. Mia is the first General Ablen’s School student to receive her graduation certificate in GGM Pedoy’s 1,728 counters and getaways. Known in class as “Mighty Mia,” she has become one of the youngest Maestro Level blue shirts in our Oahu School.
Teddy Yates has successfully completed his advanced Derobio weapon training and has been promoted to the rank of Blue Shirt-Maestro Level. Teddy is among the first students to receive his graduation certificate in GGM Pedoy’s 1,728 counters and getaways. Maestro Teddy is authorized to teach General Ablen’s School for Derobio Escrima classes outside of Hawaii. He can promote students up to the Black Shirt- Advanced Escrima level.
Rey Rubianes has successfully completed his advanced Derobio one and two bolo training and has been promoted to black-shirt, advanced Escrimador level.
Gerald Busch has successfully completed his advanced Derobio one and two bolo training and has been promoted to black-shirt, advanced Escrimador level.
Dane Isara has successfully completed his advanced Derobio one and two bolo training and has been promoted to black-shirt, advanced Escrimador level.
